How to Spot Dental Issues in Horses

How to Spot Dental Issues in Horses

Equine dental problems often develop slowly, and because horses instinctively mask discomfort, early signs can be easy to miss. That’s why it’s important to watch for subtle changes and schedule regular exams.

Common signs of dental discomfort may include:

  • Dropping or spilling grain while eating
  • Unusual chewing motions or head tilting
  • Resistance under saddle, especially during turns or collection
  • Bad breath or nasal discharge
  • Quidding (wads of chewed hay)
  • Weight loss or slow eating
  • Facial swelling or sinus issues

In younger horses, dental exams can also identify retained baby teeth or sharp points that may interfere with training and bit acceptance. For older horses, regular checkups help manage worn or missing teeth, wave mouth, and other age-related changes.

Routine Floating & Oral Exams

Routine Floating & Oral Exams

We recommend dental exams at least once a year, or more frequently for horses with known dental issues or in active work. During a dental visit, our veterinarians perform a thorough exam using sedation and a full-mouth speculum, allowing us to visualize and assess the entire mouth.

Our equine dentistry services include:

  • Motorized dental floating

  • Removal of sharp enamel points

  • Correction of hooks, ramps, and wave mouth

  • Dental radiographs

  • Evaluation of alignment, wear patterns, and missing teeth

  • Tooth extraction (when necessary)

  • Bite alignment for bit fit and comfort
